Get To Know Medha - The Brown Therapist Mama

therapy for moms in hoboken

Hi there! Welcome to Chai & Chat, your space for all things mental health and motherhood. I’m Medha S. Kudaisya, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), a perinatal psychotherapist and Hoboken immigrant mom. I am the founder of The Brown Therapist Mama, a psychotherapy practice that supports women’s mental health at all stages of their reproductive journey. I’m certified in perinatal mental health (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International and in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) through EMDRIA. I also hold a certification in interpersonal violence and trauma from Rutgers University, where I earned my Master of Clinical Social Work degree.

Okay that’s a lot of jargon, you might say, but I need to get a sense of who you are personally. I’m so glad you asked. Before we start doing deep dives into mental health topics that might be of interest to you, let me introduce myself and how I became The Brown Therapist Mama. I was born and raised in Calcutta, India; a place where spirituality and science happily co-exist and where all cultures and festivals are celebrated with enthusiasm. After earning my Bachelor of Arts in English & Psychology, I moved to the United Kingdom where I earned a Masters in Creative Writing, and where I met my husband, who has been my partner for over 20 years. Prior to relocating to New Jersey, I worked in finance, published a few stories, volunteered with domestic violence survivors, and in doing so realized that mental health is my true passion.

I discovered I was pregnant while researching grad schools. My pregnancy, to be perfectly honest, was beyond difficult. I had hyperemesis, a traumatic birth and debilitating postpartum depression afterward. I couldn’t get my daughter to latch, sleep, stop crying, take a bottle, stop crying, you get the picture. I genuinely felt that I was a failure as a mom and that my daughter deserved better. It was a dark time that led me to restart my own therapeutic journey. My therapist at the time became my savior. Not only did she gently guide me through the trauma of the birth and the colic, but she also helped me realize that I was not a bad mom.

My mission since then has always been to offer other women that same healing and hope. I believe the core task of any therapy, be it CBT, EMDR or psychodynamic, is to instill hope; that even though things are hard right now, they can get better. This is what I aim to do in my practice, through my motto of Heal, Grow, Empower. Healing leads to growth, which in turn leads to empowerment.

During our work together, you can expect a warm, non-shaming atmosphere. My therapeutic style is based on my life experiences as a PPD and trauma survivor, and is informed by my training and my mindfulness practice. I believe you are the expert in your life and that your healing journey is unique. Regardless of the length of our therapeutic relationship, I will be your biggest cheerleader and make sure you don’t have to do this motherhood thing alone.

This is why I am The Brown Therapist Mama and why I do what I do.
